The mayor-elect Walter Cortés assured today that he still does not have defined names in his future government team in Bariloche, but they have already begun to transcend possible definitions and even some of his collaborators who have advanced some possible definition.
Among the latter is the neighborhood leader and student tourism businessman Sergio Herrero who might take office in December Municipal Tourism Secretary.
Herrero took it for granted, but then Cortés -in dialogue with BLACK RIVER Journal– did not confirm. He said that in the cabinet he will incorporate people who are “around” him and he included Herrero in that circle. But he said that “Nothing is closed yet.”
Cortés pointed out that It is just in the stage of seeing “how is the municipality, what things need to be changed” and the names for each area will come later. She said that there are three months ahead and that she thinks clear up the unknowns regarding the team only when there are “a week or ten days” to assume.
Without question, Cortés said that “there is also talk of Hugo Castañón” (radical leader, with whom he shared a list in the CEB), and clarified that “there may be many names, but nothing certain to communicate”
Herrero is a consistent critic of the government of Mayor Gustavo Gennuso and his possible selection to join the cabinet in a key area such as Tourism would not have the express endorsement of the business chambers, as usually happened with that position.
Herrero has already spoken as designated secretary and said that he is open “to meet with everyone and listen to ideas”but he admitted that his access to the position that manages tourism policies was not previously agreed upon with the business community.
He assured that he maintained a fluid relationship with Cortés “for different issues” and that he received collaboration from the business leader for Children’s Day celebrations and other activities in his neighborhood, Nuestras Malvinas, where he has chaired the neighborhood council for a long time.
At the end of that neighborhood, located in the most neglected area of Bariloche, is the Herrero recreational complex that works with student groups.
“Before Sunday (due to election day) we had not talked regarding it, but This week we met and Walter told me ‘you have to go sightseeing’. And here I am, ready for whatever the new mayor needs,” said Herrero.
One of the controversial issues that he will have to address, if he is finally in charge of that area, is the future of It is bought. The very continuity of the promotion entity was called into question by some councilors of the current period, who They question the abuses incurred with the expenses made on trips to Europe.
Herrero declared himself a supporter of exempt from the Emprotur tax small businesses in the upper of the city, whose link with tourism is less direct, and leaving only the largest companies as contributors. “It is true that such a measure will take away resources. We will have to optimize and manage them better -he claimed-. I understand that the spill from tourism reaches everyone, I am not obtuse regarding it. But with the application of the rate it will be necessary to be more careful. This format does not work”.
He also criticized the fact that Emprotur’s current investment plan includes advertisements on radio stations in Bariloche, with messages aimed at attracting tourists, similar to those broadcast on stations in another town, and which he considered wasted money.
He understood that tourism in the city is experiencing a great moment, largely due to the current exchange rate that attracts foreign visitors, as well as nationals with high purchasing power. Blacksmith said that “it will be necessary to prepare a contingency plan in case the dollar changes and Bariloche is no longer an attractive option for foreigners. We will have to find a way to defend jobs.”
Sergio Herrero tries on the suit
Herrero expressed confidence in assuming the role of Tourism and said that he was seduced by the challenge, because he knows the tourist area and considers himself capable of “contributing a lot”. He hopes to meet with Burlón shortly to “find out what he did, what is pending, what worked and what didn’t.”
He said that when the entire government team is formed to take office in three months, he hopes to participate in general meetings and participate in the “storms of ideas” from which, he imagines, the changes the city needs will emerge. “We have to carry out the Bariloche that Walter has in mind and the goal should be to make life easier for people, that’s what we’re here for”, assured Herrero.
The neighborhood leader assumed in recent years a critical profile regarding the current administration and became a regular applicant for the “neighbor’s bench” to expose deficiencies in his neighborhood, demand works and question public policies of the municipality.
He said that he worked for 15 years as a radio announcer in Punta del Este, which also allowed him to get to know Uruguay’s tourist activity up close. He previously worked as a promoter, seller and coordinator of student tourism.
He pointed out that he had already received requests for meetings from sectoral groups, such as the Bariloche tour guides and if he has to assume the secretariat, he anticipated that one of his proposals will be “to prop up internal tourism, so that the people of the city can access the excursions, balance that a bit and that they also know the Victorian island, the Cathedral hill and all the attractions, so that everyone becomes guides in their own way”.
