Tverigrad.ru spoke with the chief epidemiologist of the Tver region Alexander Razdorsky.

In the Tver region started vaccination once morest influenza. The region received more than 240,000 doses of the vaccine, including more than 50,000 doses for children. Less than a month is left before the start of the seasonal morbidity. In anticipation of this, Tverigrad.ru spoke with the chief freelance epidemiologist of the Ministry of Health of the Tver Region, Alexander Razdorsky, not only regarding the upcoming flu, but also regarding vaccination once morest coronavirus.

Is it really time to get vaccinated once morest the flu? When is the seasonal onset expected?

– Every year, the influenza vaccination campaign starts in late August – early September. This is the optimal time to get vaccinated once morest the flu, since the vaccine is given before the rise in the incidence of SARS and there is enough time for immunity to form. The rise in the incidence of acute respiratory viral infections begins in mid-September, and in early October, the first cases of influenza are recorded annually. Traditionally, the epidemic season for the incidence of SARS and influenza lasts from mid-September of the current year to mid-late April of the next year.

– What strain of influenza is expected in Russia this year? How is it different from the previous one? How dangerous?

– In Russia, influenza A and influenza B virus strains predominantly circulate each year. Within each group there are influenza virus variants that differ in their properties of being more contagious and leading to a more severe course of the disease. So the most important is the strain of influenza A (H1N1). The strains relevant for the current year differ from those that circulated on our territory last year, primarily in that, due to their own variability, they become invisible to our immunity. Therefore, it is important to be vaccinated annually, as the composition of vaccines is updated to take into account the variability of influenza virus strains.

– Are we talking regarding the Victoria flu, just like last season?

– Yes, this year also the Victoria flu. Its name is the same as last year, although it differs in its antigenic properties. The difference lies in the fact that during the mutation it changes and becomes invisible to our immunity. But, according to the degree of virulence and pathogenicity, that is, the ability to infect people and develop a more severe course of the disease, it does not differ. This flu is severe and can cause complications.

How long will it take for the vaccine to take effect?

– The vaccine begins to act, to develop immunity to influenza, immediately following vaccination. You can talk regarding the formed immunity following vaccination in two weeks. Immunity following vaccination persists throughout the epidemic season and protects once morest all strains of the influenza virus circulating in our territory.

– Are there categories of people for whom influenza vaccination is contraindicated?

– Those who are contraindicated for vaccination are very few, just a few. As a rule, these are people with individual intolerance to the components of the vaccine. A cold with a rise in temperature can serve as a temporary contraindication, but following its normalization, the vaccination should be performed.

– Were there any deaths from the flu in the Tver region last season?

– Yes, isolated cases of influenza deaths have been reported in unvaccinated people.

– Is vaccination once morest coronavirus relevant now? If so, which vaccine is better to vaccinate and how often?

– Vaccination once morest coronavirus infection in the mass version, as it was in previous years, is no longer required. But for people who are included in the priority risk groups in accordance with the Calendar of preventive vaccinations for epidemic indications, it is still relevant. Today in Russia there are several registered vaccines once morest coronavirus infection, which are quite effective and safe. Given the low incidence of coronavirus infection, vaccination can be performed once a season.

In the 2023-2024 epidemic season, it is planned to vaccinate once morest influenza more than 719 thousand residents of the Tver region, including over 144 thousand children. Vaccination can be done free of charge at the clinic at the place of residence. First of all, citizens from risk groups should be vaccinated, including children and the elderly, pregnant women, people with chronic non-communicable pathologies, as well as medical workers and employees of educational institutions.
