In connection with the forty-seventh National Bible Week in Italy, the Pope, who received the members of the Italian Biblical Association and Bible teachers at the Vatican, called on them to continue their efforts to nurture God’s people with the Word so that the Holy Book remains a common patrimony.

Pope Francis said that a few are specially chosen by God, but that does not mean that others are ignored or set aside, but that the good of all should be worked towards. Speaking at the Vatican where he welcomed the members of the Biblical Association and Bible teachers of Italy gathered under the theme “Covenant and covenants between universalism and individualism”, he reminded them that the covenants between God and man are not meant to ignore those who are not part of them, but that all should work together for the common good.

The three covenants contemplated at this conference in connection with the 47th National Bible Week in Italy; The Pope recalled that the covenant with Noah is related to humanity and the relationship with the created world, the covenant with Abraham is related to the common root of faith in God which is the basis of unity and fruitfulness, the covenant of Sinai is related to the giving of the law and the choice of Israel as the instrument of salvation for all peoples.

These themes, which can be found throughout the Old and New Testaments, relate to God’s universal love for humanity,

We can see between the personal love seen through special choice. These are united by God’s irrevocable calling and gifts, and God’s constant call to communion.

The covenant made by God at the time of Noah is one that brings salvation and hope to mankind, which is tainted by enmity and violence. It also has an ecological dimension. Therefore, the Pope said, the treaty invites us to use natural resources equally and wisely.

The Holy Father recalled that the covenant with Abraham, common to all three monotheistic religions, urges us to live as brothers and calls us to build a truly peaceful world.

The Pope exhorted that the covenant concerning the election of the people of Israel was not meant to exclude or exclude others, but to work for the common good. It also has a missionary dimension, added the Pope. In the Church, the body of Christ, and among humanity, in a world that seeks to separate people, the Pope said that God chooses a few, not to ignore others, as a warning.

The Pope asked everyone to step forward by helping everyone to be nourished by the Word, so that the Holy Scriptures would be considered the common property of all.
