The Bronx Neighborhood Hosts Traditional Morelos Carnival: A Vibrant Celebration of Color, Music, and Culture in New York City

The Bronx neighborhood in New York was filled with color and music to the rhythm of the Morelos slippers. For the third consecutive year, the Morelos migrant community in the United States celebrated its traditional carnival, a party that brings a little piece of Morelos to “the big apple.”

Leading this event, the Garrido family, originally from Cuautla but with four decades in New York, became the custodians of this tradition. With them, the Citlaly Band, led by Vicente Moctezuma, from Tepoztlán, provided the authentic flavor of the Morelense sounds that made the heart of the city vibrate.

Pablo Molina, a resident of Ayala and representative of the Olaque AC civil association, highlighted the results that this new tradition has achieved on North American soil, by making children born in this country learn to dance the chinelo today:

“The most moving thing regarding this party is seeing the young people and children, born here in the United States, dance with passion and proudly wear their chinelo costumes, showing that the Morelense tradition is still alive in their blood, despite the distance” .

Hundreds of people from Morelos, from municipalities such as Yautepec, Tlaltizapán and Cuernavaca, among others, gathered in a festive embrace full of nostalgia, memories and pride.

It was not just a musical celebration. The attendees were able to enjoy the typical flavors of Morelos: fresh waters, carnitas tacos, red mole and adobo, among other delicious dishes that evoke the patron saint festivities of their homeland.

But what stood out the most was the union of troupes of slippers from various parts of the United States. From Chicago to Alabama and from North Carolina to Pennsylvania, they all came together in New York to put on a show like no other.

“The Chinelos de Morelos comparsa in the USA, headed by Don Rafael Garrido, has proven to be not only the guardian of tradition, but also ambassadors of Morelense culture in foreign lands,” added Pablo Molina.
