This Wednesday, September 6, Martin Buxant and Christophe Deborsu received an exceptional guest in “Les Puncheurs”: Bart De Wever. The leader of the N-VA and mayor of Antwerp had not given an interview on a major French-language television channel since 2014. During this interview, the politician returned to several subjects, including his vision of confederalism and the situation in Brussels.

It is well known, the politician often expresses his desire for confederalism. Concretely, this means that everything would pass to the regions, so as far as he is concerned, Flanders and Wallonia. On the other hand, foreign affairs, the army, debt management and part of the police would remain federal matters. However, he is not naive, he knows that confederalism will not pass, at least not so easily.

“JI don’t think that confederalism will be adopted by francophones thanks to enthusiasm. Rather, it will be thanks to the impossibility of continuing the status quo“, he explains. According to him, several signs show that Belgium might go through great upheavals. at some point, I think the impossibility of continuing at the federal level will be there. Next year, if the centrifugal forces, which already exist in this country, and which are getting stronger, continue, at some point, the addition of the two will be impossible“.

Finally, when asked to know that French speakers will have to accept confederalism, he replies, not forgetting to throw a spade: “I think Paul Magnette is very aware that this day is coming. I understand very well that he will avoid saying it openly to French-speaking public opinion until the last moment.“.
