A man who was the face of a pedestrian safety campaign more than a decade ago was seriously injured in a hit-and-run near the National Mall on Sunday.

Stephen Grasty, 29, was struck while riding a Lime scooter home from work at The Park, a nightclub on 14th Street NW, around 4 a.m. The accident occurred in front of the Washington Monument at the intersection of 14th Street and Jefferson Drive SW.

As he lay in the street, Stephen was able to Facetime with his mother, Shelley Grasty.

“He was screaming in pain because of his leg and he said it was broken,” he exclaimed.

She told our sister network News4 that 10 years ago her son was photographed at a pedestrian safety campaign with a tire track on his face.

The sign reads: “Pedestrians do not come with airbags. Yield to pedestrians when turning.” He also graduated from Howard University.

Doctors told his family that he was lucky to be alive. He is in ICU with a broken neck, leg and foot. According to Shelley Grasty, he is scheduled for multiple surgeries in the next few days.

“He is still in a very good mood. He is very scared, like all of us, ”he explained.

According to a police report, a witness saw a car that looked like a 2013 Nissan Sentra with Virginia license plates and struck Stephen without stopping. The witness then followed the driver to Virginia and was able to obtain the license plate number of the car.

“I just want to thank you for being here and for having the courage to go following this vehicle and get that license plate number. Because if it weren’t for her, my son would be left here for dead, cars were passing around him. I just want to thank you,” Shelley Grasty said.

You want the person who was driving the car that hit your son to come forward.

“How can you hit a person and leave them? It’s despicable. I don’t know how you sleep at night. My son did not deserve this,” she stated.

Stephen’s family recovered the torn clothing he was wearing that night at the crash site. They wonder if the crossing has adequate lighting and if the traffic cameras were working at the time of the accident.

Police continue to search for the hit-and-run driver.
