The specialist medical association European Respiratory Society (ERS), which represents more than 30,000 lung specialists, is therefore calling on the EU Parliament and governments worldwide to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and mitigate climate change. “This has been shown to impact everyone’s health, but respiratory patients are arguably among the most vulnerable individuals.” Their symptoms will worsen and for some it will be fatal, informed Zorana Jovanovic Andersen of the University of Copenhagen and chair of the ERS Environment and Health Committee.

According to the report, the effects include higher temperatures and a resulting increase in allergens, such as pollen. These include more frequent extreme weather events such as heat waves, droughts and wildfires, which lead to episodes of extreme air pollution, as well as rainfall and floods, which cause higher humidity levels and mold in homes.
