The super-rich must finally contribute
Vienna (OTS) – While 300 millionaires worldwide have signed an open letter for wealth taxes and even the European Commission is suggesting that Austria should tax wealth, the government remains inactive. Barbara Teiber, Chairwoman of the GPA trade union, therefore welcomes every initiative for fairer taxation: “It is high time for a millionaire tax. While employees have their wage tax automatically debited, super-rich heirs remain unaffected with their completely non-performing assets. I am happy when millionaire taxes are discussed once more.”
Teiber: “Numerous surveys show that around 70 percent of the population are in favor of millionaire taxes. A redistribution is now needed so that important public services such as education, childcare or health can be financed, especially in times of high inflation. Workers and consumers, who together cover 80 percent of tax revenue, must finally be relieved.”
“It is significant that industry and the chamber of commerce are immediately stepping out to defend the super-rich. The ÖVP, as its extended arm in government, must finally give up its blockade and allow millionaire taxes! Austria’s financial elite should follow the example of responsible millionaires like Marlene Engelhorn, who themselves demand taxation of their assets,” concluded Teiber.
