UN allocates $125 million from Emergency Fund to underfunded humanitarian crises

The $125 million released on Tuesday by Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths will support underfunded humanitarian operations in 14 countries in Africa, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. Afghanistan and Yemen top the list of recipients with $20 million each.

The allocation will focus on efforts to better include affected people in humanitarian decision-making.

The highest annual amount ever allocated

“It is cruel to note that in many humanitarian operations, aid agencies manage with very little financial means at the very time when the needs of the populations force them to intensify their action”, declared in a press release, the chief of the United Nations Humanitarian Service.

This injection brings the total assistance provided by the Emergency Fund through its “underfunded emergencies” window this year to more than $270 million, Mr. Griffiths said, noting that this is the highest annual amount ever allocated, to the largest number of countries, reflecting skyrocketing humanitarian needs and the fact that regular donor funding is not keeping pace.

“Thanks to the generosity of a wide range of donors, we can count on the CERF to fill some gaps. Lives are thus saved. But we need individual donors to do the same – this is a fund by all and for all,” Mr Griffiths added.

Mali and Burkina Faso among neglected crises

In 2023, global funding needs exceeded $55 billion to support 250 million people affected by conflict, the impact of the climate crisis, natural disasters, epidemics, displacement and other crises. Faced with these record needs, less than 30% of the necessary funds have been received.

The Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) endowment announced on Tuesday will help scale up humanitarian assistance in some of the world’s longest and most neglected crises: Afghanistan and Yemen ($20 million each) , Burkina Faso ($9 million), Mali ($8 million), Myanmar ($9 million) and Haiti ($8 million).

The allocated funds will also support operations in favor of refugees in Bangladesh ($8 million) and Uganda ($6 million).

In addition, funds will be allocated to Venezuela ($8 million), Central African Republic ($6.5 million), Mozambique ($6.5 million), Cameroon ($6 million), Occupied Palestinian Territories ($6 million) and Malawi ($4 million).
