According to a newspaper report, China has banned state officials from using foreign smartphones because of ongoing tensions with the West. Employees of some authorities are no longer allowed to bring Apple iPhones and devices from some other manufacturers to the workplace, wrote the “Wall Street Journal”, citing insiders. However, it is unclear how many employees have received this order and which providers are affected in addition to Apple.

The Chinese authorities might not immediately be reached for comment. The People’s Republic has passed some new laws in recent years due to data protection concerns. At the same time, she called on domestic companies to reduce their dependence on foreign technologies. Western countries, above all the USA, had previously restricted exports of certain high-tech goods to China in order to slow down the country’s technological and military progress.

At the same time, Western countries banned the products of some Chinese companies because of possible espionage by the government in Beijing. The best-known example of this is TikTok. State employees are not allowed to use the short video app on their work cell phones. In some countries it is even completely forbidden. Huawei also hit the headlines. For example, Germany subjects the components of the telecom supplier to a security check. At the end of the day, telecom companies might be forced to remove parts that have already been installed.
