Enrique Tarrio Sentenced to 22 Years for Role in Capitol Assault: Heaviest Sentence for Attack on American Democracy

2023-09-05 21:59:12

According to the prosecution, he was “more of a general than a soldier”. The former leader of the American far-right group Proud Boys, Enrique Tarrio, was sentenced to 22 years in prison on Tuesday for his role in the assault on the Capitol. This is the heaviest sentence imposed by a court for the attack on American democracy in the January 6, 2021.

Although Tarrio was not present in Washington that day, he was “the ultimate leader” who “organized” the seditious plot aimed at preventing the transfer of power between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, said said Justice Kelly. This federal magistrate appointed by Trump had retained aggravating circumstances for acts of terrorism requested by the prosecutors.

The other four Proud Boys members convicted in May along with Enrique Tarrio were sentenced last week to 10 to 18 years in prison. The heaviest sentence so far for this attack, 18 years, had been imposed on Stewart Rhodes, founder of the far-right militia Oath Keepers, for seditious conspiracy.

Absent on January 6

Unlike the other defendants, Enrique Tarrio, once morest whom the prosecution requested 33 years in prison, was not in the Capitol on that fateful day, but in Baltimore, in the neighboring state of Maryland, due to a decision of justice enjoining him to leave the federal capital.

This injunction was part of the conditions of his release following two days of detention for burning a “Black Lives Matter” banner belonging to a church in Washington mainly attended by African-Americans during a demonstration which had degenerated in December.
