Impact of climate change on mosquitoes

Yellow fever, dengue fever, chikungunya, Zika… The female tiger mosquito alone can transmit more than 20 viruses. Particularly invasive and resistant, the tiger mosquito arrived in metropolitan France in 2004. In 2022, a marked increase in dengue fever cases was recorded in the country.

In April 2023, an opinion from the Health Risk Monitoring and Anticipation Committee (Covars) alerted to the increase in dengue fever, Zika and chikungunya epidemics in metropolitan France, in relation to climate change. In the program, we also interview specialists on the impact of climate change on the vector species of malaria, in areas today free of indigenous contamination, as in already infested tropical regions.

Can we anticipate the effects of global warming for mosquitoes vectors of viral or parasitic diseases? How can these developments be explained? Are preventive health measures possible?

► At the end of the transmission, we take stock of the study carried out by researchers from Inserm and the University of Bordeaux, Bordeaux Population Health research center, which demonstrates that air pollution accelerates eye aging, which can lead to higher risks of developing glaucoma, for the inhabitants of areas polluted with fine particles. Back on these results with Laure Gayraud, PhD student in epidemiology, at the Bordeaux Population Health Center (Unit U1219 INSERM and University of Bordeaux).
