About three million French people have gone to E-cigarette. As Tobacco Info Service reminds us, the latter can be considered as an aid to stop or reduce tobacco consumption. “E-liquids seem less harmful than cigarette smoke, which contains more than 4,000 chemical substances, including irritants, toxic products (tars, carbon monoxide, etc.) and more than 50 substances that can cause or promote the appearance of of cancer”, details the platform.

A recent study looked at the impact of electronic cigarettes on the male urogenital system. As part of this scientific research, adult rats were placed under a glass bell jar and exposed to cigarette or e-cigarette smoke. Urine cotinine levels, testicular weight, sperm count and motility, testicular histology and biochemical results were compared with those of the control group.

Results ? “In some rats of both groups, the seminiferous tubules were disorganized and germ cells and Sertoli cells were separated and excreted. Arrest of germ cell separation, cavity formation, necrosis, fibrosis and atrophy have been observed in severe cases.” No significant difference was observed between the groups in terms of motility and sperm count.

Biochemical analysis required

In view of these results, the researchers point out that the cigarette and the liquid of the electronic cigarette can increase oxidative stress and cause morphological changes in the testis. “Therefore, it should be considered that, although EC fluid has been shown to be harmless in smoking cessation studies, it may increase oxidative stress and cause morphological changes in the testis. Nevertheless, further research is needed to understand post-exposure spermogram results,” the study authors recommend.

However, there are limitations to this study. “Although e-cigarette smoke was used in aerosol form, no biochemical analysis of the liquid was performed. A biochemical analysis of the e-liquid may be necessary to assess the results more accurately”.
