More than 10 years ago, Denis Ordovás, 45, and his wife Letícia, 51, stopped being a couple to start a polyamorous relationship with Keterlin Kaefer, 32. A few months ago Keterlin became pregnant with a boy to be called Yan and the baby’s birth is scheduled for October 13.

For the little boy to have all his rights, the trio went to court and got the Family and Inheritance Court of Novo Hamburgo, in the Porto Alegre Metropolitan Region, to recognize the polyaffective relationship between the three adults.

Thanks to this, the child will have the right to multiparental registration, that is, he will be able to bear the surnames of his three parents.

The Brazilian trio that was recognized by Justice: “Families are changing”

“Families are changing and it was time for these relationships to be seen,” Letícia told the g1 site following the Justice ruling was announced.

“It was always in our plans to have children and when it happened we decided to go to court. We were very happy with the decision, following all, ten years have passed. Many of the ‘normal’ relationships do not even reach that point”, Letícia compared.

As they explained, when they wanted to formalize the relationship with the authorities, they were rejected because Denis and Leticia have been married since 2006. The civil registry required them to divorce first. Now, with the judicial decision, the registry offices will be obliged to accept the registration.

“We never hide our relationship from anyone, and the vast majority of people react very well. Some take a little longer to process the information, but we never suffered any kind of prejudice”, said Letícia.

In the grounds of the ruling, Judge Gustavo Borsa Antonello mentioned that the union of the three is “covered with publicity, continuity, affection and with the aim of starting a family and seeking happiness.”

As the decision is from the first instance, it can still be appealed by the Public Ministry, local media noted.
