Environmental protection organization condemns the Chancellor’s dangerous diversionary maneuvers in climate protection
Vienna (OTS) – Greenpeace sharply criticizes the statements made by ÖVP boss Nehammer in the ORF summer talks. Nehammer relies on diversionary maneuvers and bogus solutions both for important climate protection laws and for the question of the dangerous dependency on Russian gas. Lisa Panhuber, spokeswoman for the environmental organization, said: “Even following a summer full of destruction from extreme weather events, ÖVP boss Nehammer is unable to take the climate crisis seriously in its fatal dimensions. As Chancellor, he bears a special responsibility for the people and the environment in Austria. It’s not too late to radically reduce emissions and curb relentless heating. But Nehammer ignores science, downplays the urgency of the climate crisis and shifts his responsibility away.”
Although the effects of the climate crisis are now massively noticeable, there was no commitment from the ÖVP leader to urgently needed laws. “In more than 35 years of government responsibility, the ÖVP has done a lot to make Austria dependent on fossil energies, especially from Russia. However, it does very little to reduce this dependency and reduce the need for fossil fuels. We are still waiting for the Renewable Heat Act and the Climate Protection Act. The eco-social tax reform and the energy efficiency law were weakened by the ÖVP and are not as effective as they should be. Relying on voluntary developments on the market has led us into the climate crisis, and those who continue to rely on it are consciously risking a future worth living on this planet,” says Panhuber.
