A new rumor deepened the idea that the Apple will in fact extend the use of spatial computing — started with the Vision Pro — to other products, creating an ecosystem around the concept. In addition to speculation related to a new AirTag, we now have information regarding a possible iPhone “Ultra” that would have those capabilities.
According to a post by a leaker no Weibo seen by MacRumors, the new iPhone model — to be released in the future, following the launch of the Apple Vision Pro in early 2024 — might bring cameras that will “lead the market by rethinking what kind of photos and videos a mobile phone can capture”. The source, according to the vehicle, would have a good record of successes, making the rumor a little more believable.
From what was said by leaker, it can be understood that the novelty would be the capture of “spatial” images, as well as the virtual/augmented reality headset can, creating immersive 3D content. The Vision Pro is the first to have hardware dedicated to this capability, with a three-dimensional camera and sensors that produce, according to Apple, photos and videos with high depth.
Although the headset can also display content from the iCloud library, the big difference is the photos/videos produced using the device, which can be captured in 3D. In this way, the future iPhone “Ultra” may also have the capacity to perform these spatial captures, increasing the possibilities of producing these photos and videos — which might be seen in the Vision Pro, for example.
Himself leaker highlighted the incompleteness of the rumor at the current stage, so that, if the speculation is confirmed, we should still hear more details regarding the implementation of this feature in an iPhone model. It is worth noting, however, that for spatial capture, an important factor is the distance between the sensors, something that will certainly be a challenge for smartphone engineering with this feature.
Although the newer iPhones Pro have, for example, the LiDAR sensor – which already offers some mapping capability – the Vision Pro’s spatial computation is at a much more advanced level. There should therefore be changes in terms of hardware, with one more sensor being added.
According to the journalist Mark Gurman (and Bloomberg), Apple will release an “Ultra” iPhone model next year. Such a device is expected to replace the Pro Max model, becoming the most powerful. It is possible, then, that the new spatial capture capabilities are one of the differentials of the possible flagship.
