Neymar to Al-Hilal is one of the 10 most overpaid transfers of the summer. But the value of the Brazilian is also elsewhere, on a marketing level.
The summer transfer window has been marked by a series of major moves in the world of football. However, with ever-increasing transfer figures, it’s natural to wonder whether some players have been overpaid for their services. Here are the 10 most overpaid transfers according to Football Benchmark of KPMG, to the comparison of the compensation of recruits and their estimated value on the transfer market.
Caicedo to Chelsea the most overpaid transfer of the summer in the transfer window
Topping the list of potentially overpaid transfers is Moisés Caicedo, for whom Chelsea paid 116 million euros for Brighton & Hove Albion. The player’s market value at the start of the transfer window was 76.4 million euros, which indicates an additional cost of almost 40 million euros for his transfer. In second place is Declan Rice, for whom Arsenal paid 116.6 million euros, while his market value was 77.3 million euros. This transaction took place when Rice had only 12 months of contract left (with an option for an additional year). Interestingly, both players occupy the ‘number 6’ midfield position and are among the five most expensive transfers in Premier League history.
Chelsea and Al-Alhi stand out in this ranking
Chelsea have also acquired another talented defensive midfielder in Roméo Lavia from Southampton for a €21.5m surplus to his pre-transfer market value. Saudi club Al-Ahli SC feature on the list three times, having collectively paid €80.8m more for Neymar Jr., Rúben Neves and Aleksandar Mitrović than their market values. Neymar, a global superstar, exemplifies the importance of considering marketing value alongside market value, with over 400 million followers on social media platforms.
Defensive midfielders, these dear recruits for clubs
Interestingly, five of the top six spots are occupied by defensive midfielders. It makes one wonder what players such as Xavi, Claude Makélélé or Sergio Busquets would command in today’s market. One of the most prominent names on the list is Harry Kane. Despite only 12 months of contract remaining, Tottenham managed to secure €100m from Bayern Munich for the England striker’s playing rights, exceeding his €18m market value.
