Just like in Germany, France wants to introduce a public transport card for a fixed amount per month. This allows travelers to make unlimited monthly use of, for example, regional trains. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed this on Monday.
Macron was asked in conversation with a popular YouTube channel regarding the German initiative and whether he is in favor of it. According to the French president, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne and Minister of Transport Clément Beaune have already started preparations for such a plan. All French departments in favor of the idea can join, Macron said.
In April, the so-called Deutschlandticket went on sale in Germany. This allows travelers to make unlimited use of the bus, tram, metro and train every month for 49 euros. The intercity trains and high-speed trains are not included in the monthly public transport subscription.
The Deutschland ticket was introduced following the success of a similar initiative in the summer of 2022. Then it was possible to travel by public transport for a whole month for 9 euros. That subscription was available in June, July and August and served as a means to offset the impact of inflation and higher energy prices in Germany. Minister Beaune also sees the plans as a helping hand for the French population.
Macron did not say when the plans in France should be ready on Monday. It is also not yet clear whether metros, trams and buses will also be covered by the subscription in addition to regional trains. According to Macron, the plans to get more people to take the train are part of the effort to reduce French CO2 emissions.
