According to a report by the New York Times, North Korea’s ruler Kim Jong-un wants to travel to Russia to negotiate arms deliveries with President Vladimir Putin. Moscow is concerned with securing supplies of weapons and ammunition for the war of aggression once morest Ukraine, the newspaper reported on Monday, citing unnamed officials from the US and allied governments. The meeting is scheduled to take place in Vladivostok.

An economic forum will take place in the city on Russia’s Pacific coast from September 10th to 13th, and the two heads of state want to meet on the sidelines of this event. The Washington Post also reported on the planned meeting.

Kim rarely leaves his isolated country, but officials said he might travel to Vladivostok on Russia’s Pacific coast in an armored train for the meeting, the New York Times wrote. But it is also possible that Kim will travel to Moscow.

The newspaper also reported that Putin was hoping for North Korean artillery shells and anti-tank weapons. Kim is said to be hoping for advanced technology for satellites and nuclear-powered submarines. Kim is also seeking food aid for his impoverished country, officials said.

US National Security Council communications director John Kirby said on Wednesday that US intelligence agencies had information regarding arms sales negotiations between the two countries. Accordingly, the Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu recently traveled to North Korea to convince Pyongyang to sell artillery ammunition to Russia. Since that visit, Kirby has said that Putin and Kim have exchanged correspondence in which they pledged to expand their bilateral cooperation.

With the envisaged arms deals, Russia would receive from North Korea “significant quantities and several types of ammunition” “that the Russian military intends to use in Ukraine,” Kirby said at the time. The US government is asking North Korea to stop negotiations with Russia.
