A six-month-old child’s eyes turned from brown to blue following receiving antiviral treatment for COVID-19.
As soon as the symptoms appeared, the parents stopped the treatment and the baby’s eyes returned to normal five days later.
The child’s eyesight was ultimately unaffected, but doctors cannot yet say whether he might suffer from any other long-term problems.
The antiviral in question is favipiravir, a drug used to kill a wide variety of viruses, including the flu or Ebola, Live Science reported.
In 2020, the drug was approved in China to treat COVID-19, then other countries approved it such as India, Japan or Thailand.
Among the classic side effects of favipiravir, we find diarrhea, a drop in the number of white blood cells or a high threshold of uric acid in the blood. If left untreated, it can even lead to nausea and kidney stones.
The color change as a side effect was previously reported in December 2021 when a 20-year-old man’s corneas turned from brown to blue, just a day following taking favipiravir. Other cases have since been reported.
