Whether you’re a manga/anime fan or not, you’ve surely heard of One Piece at some point in your life. The Pirates series, which follows Monkey D. Luffy as he becomes King of Pirates and searches for the fabled Golden Roger’s Treasure, has traveled 30 years along the Grand Line. It’s been less than a week since Netflix released the live-action adaptation, and in the months leading up to its release, we’ve seen a lot of concern that one of the most beloved shows in history will become another poorly adapted screen offering. But that doesn’t seem to be the case, quite the opposite. “One Piece” has won critical acclaim from critics and audiences alike, with an 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes (96% audience rating), already the highest-rated show of the year. But given the ratings it’s achieved so far, it might be Netflix’s new flagship (Jolly Roger, of course). According to Comicbook, the series has become the most-watched series in 84 territories, breaking the record previously held by “Stranger Things” and “Wednesday.” “Luffy” beat Eleven and the young members of the Addams family (both the most-watched in 83 countries) by one point to become Netflix’s best premiere ever. With numbers like that and the sheer number of One Piece arcs, stories, and scripts (the anime is now approaching 1,100 episodes), we have no doubt that Netflix will continue to leverage the brand, and it’s only just getting started.
