Waiting for the fire: The huge wooden figure Burning Man will be burned late on Monday evening (local time) in the temporary festival city of Black Rock City in the Nevada desert, but the exodus of festival visitors is already planned for Monday morning. Rain, storm and mud overshadowed the second half of the festival this year.

After rain, storm and mud, the exodus of 70,000 visitors began on Monday morning at the Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert. Rumors of unrest, disease and a shootout had previously circulated. The traditional highlight, the burning of a huge wooden sculpture, now takes place later.

Burning Man was a Rain Man this year. When the skies stopped raining over the temporary city of Black Rock City on Sunday, many of the more than 70,000 visitors to the nine-day US festival of arts, music and counterculture took the opportunity to secure an early exit from the site. The dismantling of dance halls and bars at Burning Man also began on Sunday. A steady stream of RVs and cars were trying to leave Black Rock Desert’s playa that had been a lake thousands of years ago.
