PHOENIX — Adley Rutschman and Jordan Westburg both hit crucial doubles in a four-run sixth inning, opening a close matchup and leading the Baltimore Orioles to an 8-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.
Arizona has lost five of its last six games. The D-backs find themselves in a three-way tie with the San Francisco Giants and Miami Marlins for the final postseason berth in the NL wild-card race. All three teams have a 70-67 record.
The Orioles snapped a 4-4 tie by producing a four-run rally in the sixth. Ryan O’Hearn got the offense going starting with a double, then scored on Cedric Mullins’ single. Westburg, who pinch-hit, doubled down the left-field line, and Rutschman doubled in two more to make it 8-4.
The Orioles’ offensive outburst went following Arizona ace Zac Gallen (14-7), who is one of the leaders in the NL Cy Young Award race. Reliever Danny Coulombe (5-1) earned the victory by pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
For the Orioles, Mexican Ramón Urías batted 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Venezuelan Anthony Santander went 1-for-4 with one run scored.
For the Diamondbacks, the Cuban Lourdes Gurriel Jr. went 4-2 with an RBI and a run scored, and the Dominicans Ketel Marte went 4-1 with an RBI, and Geraldo Perdomo went 4-1 with a run scored.
