Olympism seems to be coming to the end of a cycle. Thomas Bach, who will end his presidency of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2025 following twelve years in office, had to face, with his teams and the Olympic movement (international federations, national committees, organizing committees of the Olympic Games), a number of internal problems, crises, contradictions and challenges (autonomy and good governance, corruption/doping/integrity, mental health of athletes, sustainability and legacy of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (OPG), candidacy crisis especially in winter, decline in interest of young people) and external (climate/sustainability of the planet, human rights, digitization of society and growing sedentary lifestyle of young people, Covid-19, war in Ukraine, fragmentation of the world and societies, etc.).
They have often had to find, on all these subjects, compromises that are more or less acceptable to public opinion, particularly in the West, often because of the disconnection between rhetoric and the reality of practices on the ground. This observation calls for new institutional responses that can be totally disruptive around the functioning of the Olympic movement.
