University conference changes continue, affecting college football as well. Stanford, SMU and Cal are also joining, the ACC announced. For the Pac-12, on the other hand, it’s getting thinner and thinner.
The 2023 college football season (Northern Illinois at Boston College on Saturday from 5:40 p.m. live on ProSieben MAXX and in the live stream on ran.de) has started and the first games have been played. However, it is not only the sporty that is causing a stir at the moment. In the past year, more and more well-known universities announced their move to another conference.
The reason for this is the TV contracts of the conferences with the broadcasting stations. The Pac-12, whose TV contract ends following the current season, is particularly affected by departures. A new deal has not yet been finalized, which is why several colleges are turning their backs on the conference.
College Football: Only two teams left in the Pac-12
On Friday it was announced that two more universities were leaving the Pac-12 and will be playing in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in the future. These are the University of Stanford and the University of California, Berkeley (Cal). In addition, Southern Methodist University (SMU), previously a member of the American Athletic Conference (AAC), will become an ACC member in the coming year.
From the coming season, the ACC will be home to a total of 18 universities, while the Pac-12 will only have two of the original twelve teams. Last year, UCLA and USC made their move to the Big Ten, and this year Oregon and Washington State followed suit. Colorado, Arizona, Arizona State and Utah will play in the Big 12 as of September 2024. This leaves only Oregon State and Washington State in the Pac-12, whose future should be completely open.
the essentials in brief
Although the changes bring financial advantages, they are not completely free of criticism. In addition to the complete reorganization of college sports, trips to away games should not be very popular. In some cases, the universities are more than 4,000 kilometers apart.
