A prison near Minneapolis, Minnesota went into lockdown Saturday followingnoon following nearly 100 inmates refused to return to their cells.

Members of the crisis team were dispatched to the scene to negotiate with the detainees, reports BBC News.

According to the first information from the English media, their protest would be linked to the conditions they face in the “Minnesota Correctional Facility”.

In the midst of a heat wave, a lack of employees would mean that inmates would have been confined to their cells for several hours, even though they were not air-conditioned.

According to the union of correctional workers of this institution, AFSME Council 5, the lack of personnel would be very problematic in this prison.

Correctional Commissioner Paul Schnell tells CNN that the inmates were in no way violent during their protest.

“They were at tables, playing cards and talking to each other,” says Paul Schnell.

The tactical response unit was deployed “as a preventive measure”, according to a prison spokesman.

In total, regarding 1200 people are detained in this prison.
