TIROLER TAGESZEITUNG “Editorial” edition of September 4, 2023, by Manfred Mitterwachauer: “Transit policy between all fronts”

2023-09-03 20:01:06

Innsbruck (OTS) A racer who wants to bring down the air hundred. A VP tourism spokesman jumping on this bandwagon. And a Ministry of Transport that does not recognize a transit route on the Brenner autobahn: Tyrolean transport policy and the new normal.

Attacks on the anti-transit policy from outside are common in Tyrol. From EU Transport Commissioner Adina Valean, Italy’s Transport Minister Matteo Salvini and Germany’s counterpart Volker Wissing. Attacks from within and the undermining of previous positions – like these days – are not entirely new, but they do double damage because of their external impact.
With conventional common sense, it is difficult to understand that a new building is not a new building, but a “general renovation”. In the case of the dilapidated Luegbrücke along the Brenner autobahn, this is the case. In this way, the authorities have already denied an environmental impact assessment. The fact that Leonore Gewessler’s (Greens) Ministry of Transport now only sees the A13 as an “inner-Alpine connection” and not a transalpine transit axis as part of the route decision can only be described as unworldly. A formal legal practice whose political consequences are incalculable. Because: How does Austria intend to continue to seriously promote understanding for the Tyrolean transit problem at EU level, even win Italy and Germany for the “bookable truck motorway” (slot) if it has 2.5 million trucks and 11 million .Alp crossing most frequently traveled by car rated only as a separate section beginning in Innsbruck and ending at the Brenner Pass?
But the IG-Luft-100 for cars on the highway mutated into fair game. Primarily for a racer. Tempo 150 would also have resulted in a penalty at Tempo 130. But not for driving license suspension. The IG-L is to blame. In Salzburg, the FP drops the air hundred. Because the air quality is good. But anyone who, like the Zillertal VP National Councilor and tourism spokesman Franz Hörl (or the FP) demands the same for Tyrol, is only demonstrating that they have no idea of local transport policy. Otherwise, Hörl would have to demand the end of almost the entire truck driving ban catalog in the same breath. The IG-L and the permanent air hundred are both the basis and the basic requirement for this. Yes, the air has also gotten better in Tyrol. And if the air pollution limits are not tightened, the “IGL” will fall. Either way. Only: The EU is already turning this screw and Tyrol is counting on Gewessler to act faster here. Legally she might. In order not to give transit trucks a completely free ride.
But one thing is certain regarding all of this: the Valeans, the Salvinis and the Wissings laugh up their sleeves at this inner-Austrian circus. They will not find a better accomplice for their request to finally get in the way of Tyrolean transport policy.
