Successful Viennese sewage treatment plant campaign “Don’t flush garbage” starts second wave
Vienna (OTS) – “Our initiative once morest rubbish that is incorrectly disposed of in the toilet or sewer is showing initial success,” says Vienna’s Climate Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky, drawing a positive interim balance. Since the start of the information offensive “Do not flush garbage” in mid-2022, the amount of “screenings” in the Vienna sewage treatment plant has fallen by around 335 tons. This means that around 5 percent less waste such as wet wipes, tampons or cigarette butts arrives at the sewage treatment plant than in the previous year. “A very pleasing result,” says Czernohorszky, “but we want to create even more awareness among the Viennese for proper waste disposal. That’s why we’re starting a second wave of the ‘Don’t flush the garbage’ campaign with immediate effect.”
Zwtl.: Proper waste disposal protects the environment and climate
Less waste in the wastewater not only means less work for the employees in the sewage treatment plant, correct waste disposal also protects the environment and climate. Since mid-2022, ebswien has been able to save around 60 truck journeys – the screenings have to be brought in containers for thermal recycling. The cost of disposing of the sodden rubbish, which does not burn easily, might also be reduced. Climate Councilor Czernohorszky: “In Vienna we have an extremely well-developed range of options for proper waste disposal. Sewer and toilet do not have to be used as garbage cans. We can all make a contribution to climate and environmental protection here. My request to every Viennese is: don’t flush the garbage!”
Zwtl.: Information offensive is well received
“I’m very happy that our ‘Don’t flush garbage’ initiative has worked so well so far,” explains ebswien general director Christian Gantner. Our campaign not only has a quantitatively measurable success, it was also very well received by the Viennese, which is confirmed by the accompanying effectiveness measurement.” The second wave of the campaign aims to further strengthen the effect achieved. Because, according to the ebswien boss, the two-stage screening system of the Vienna sewage treatment plant still filters more than 17 tons of solids from the wastewater of the Viennese people every day. Gantner: “Of course, these 17 tons do not only consist of improperly disposed waste. Nevertheless, we still find large quantities of wet wipes, leftover food, monthly hygiene articles and cigarette butts in our screenings. So we continue our campaign. I am convinced that the Viennese will also change their behavior if they have the necessary information. ”
Zwtl.: The Stuhl-Gang goes to the cinema
The second wave of the “Do not flush garbage” campaign relies on the tried and tested and the new: the website spuelkeinenmuell.at explains the consequences of “mis-throws” into the toilet and names the correct disposal methods for all types of waste. With a “rinse”, users can test their knowledge of what is allowed in the toilet and what is not, and at the same time test their manual dexterity. A song performed by the “Chair Gang” (consisting of five animated characters named Flo the Klo, Lilly Lulu, Howie Pile, Betty Besen and Rolli Rolle) tackles the subject in an easily accessible way. It is used in radio and social media. The members of Stuhl-Gang are also active on info screens and on Instagram. In addition, the Stuhl-Gang is going to the cinema in the second wave of the campaign and will be on TV.
Zwtl.: Clean sewage, clean electricity
The city’s central sewage treatment plant in Simmering has been cleaning the waste water of the Viennese since 1980. More than 6,000 liters of waste water enter the plant every second. After a mechanical cleaning stage, the wastewater runs through two biological cleaning stages in 20 hours, in which the approximately 170 employees at ebswien take nature as a model. Around 20,000 kilograms of solids and more than 100,000 kilograms of dissolved pollutants are removed from the wastewater every day. The treated wastewater flows via the Danube Canal into the Danube without impairing its water quality. The ebswien so clarifies everything and ensures that the Danube stays blue. And that entirely with green electricity from our own generation, so Vienna’s sewage treatment plant is also a real “eco-power plant”. Good for the environment, good for the climate.
