Delhi: Differences are intensifying over the joint declaration at the G20 meeting in Delhi. The United States and France clarified that the Russian position once morest Ukraine cannot be included in the declaration. India has announced that it will try to reach a consensus in a meeting of Sherpas that will last for three days.
The efforts to reach a consensus on a joint statement are yet to succeed as the leaders of various nations are set to arrive in Delhi from Thursday for the G20 summit. The rift that started at the meeting of foreign ministers ahead of the summit continues. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping are staying away from the summit. Russia strongly opposes the move to include the Ukraine conflict in the joint declaration. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made it clear that he would veto the declaration if the Russian position was not also mentioned. Russia also has China’s support in this regard. But US President Joe Biden’s suggestion is that Delhi’s announcement should send a strong message once morest Russia’s belligerence. This will be the subject of the discussion between Joe Biden and Narendra Modi in Delhi on Friday.
The three-day meeting of the Sherpas of the G20 countries began at the ITC Grand Bharat Hotel in Nooh, Haryana. India will move for consensus in the meeting chaired by Amitabh Kant. Narendra Modi’s move to try to find a solution to the Ukraine conflict at the G20 has been countered by the tough stance taken by Russia and China.
