ROME (AP) — Maurizio Sarri, the former Napoli coach, reacted with an offensive gesture toward home fans when the Lazio train arrived in the southern city on Friday.
The bespectacled manager, who likes to quote Charles Bukowski, made a bigger impression in his former home stadium on Saturday when he led Lazio to a 2-1 win that capped Napoli’s perfect run in the Serie TO.
Lazio lost its first two games of the season following finishing second last season, 16 points behind Napoli, the escaped champion.
Sarri, who coached Napoli from 2015-18 in his first job with a major team following decades with provincial teams, restored a winning mentality to the Partenopei that was capped when Luciano Spalletti coached Victor Osimhen and company to the team’s first championship in over three decades last season.
Now he is trying to achieve the same at Lazio, which last won Serie A almost a quarter of a century ago.
Sarri also picked up a win at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in March, one of Napoli’s only two home defeats last season.
Luis Alberto and Felipe Anderson were involved in both Lazio goals. First, Luis Alberto put the visitors ahead with a heel following an assist from Anderson. After the break, Anderson moved back down the right flank before sending a cross that Luis Alberto’s feint freed Daichi Kamada to score.
It was Kamada’s first goal in Italy following the Japan international joined Lazio from Eintracht Frankfurt.
Piotr Zielinski equalized for Napoli two minutes following Luis Alberto’s goal from a deflected shot.
Lazio had two goals disallowed for offside following VAR review and goalkeeper Ivan Provedel deflected a shot over Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s crossbar.
Napoli was three points behind AC Milan, which beat Roma 2-1 on Friday.
Back in Italy following spending a year with West Ham, Gianluca Scamacca scored twice in Atalanta’s 3-0 win over Monza.
Bologna came from a goal down to beat Claudio Ranieri’s Cagliari 2-1, Giovanni Fabbian scoring a game-winner in the 89th minute following a mistake by goalkeeper Boris Radunovic. In addition, Udinese and promoted Frosinone drew 0-0.
