The collective of citizens “Attack the ZACC” carried out, on Saturday morning, a symbolic action during the inauguration of the Agricultural Fair of Battice. The members questioned the Walloon Minister Willy Borsus concerning the project to develop a mixed economic activity park in Herve.
The group notably handed over to the authorities present bouquets of concreted wheat and corn, “in order to underline the dissonance between their speeches to support sustainable agriculture and the reality, namely always more artificialization of agricultural land”.
“The project presented was designed in the spirit of the 20th century. It is located in a Mixed Economic Activity Zone and in two Concerted Communal Development Zones as provided for in the sector plan. The world has changed since then and we are faced with vital issues linked, among other things, to climate change and the collapse of biodiversity”, argues the collective, noting several problems.
The project, the first phase before the development of a housing stock, also does not take into account the new risks linked to flooding, estimates the collective, denouncing its realization as “irresponsible”, and pointing the finger at an “artificialization” of the soils of an area of more than 80ha, between Herve and Battice. “The artificialization of dozens of hectares on the heights of Herve can only worsen the situation downstream when heavy rains occur, inevitably causing floods and overflows, both on the Meuse side and on the Vesdre side” , he adds.
The collective also fears for the preservation of agricultural land in the area, a significant part of the land where the PAEM is located being made up of permanent meadows for agricultural purposes.
