This Friday (1st), the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) opened in Brasília your Anti-Piracy Lab. The new structure specializes in the analysis of Clandestine TV Boxes equipment and can block even live programs

According to the agency, the laboratory is prepared to also block live transmissions via streaming and mobile applications. However, Anatel has no legal attribution for such a measure and will restrict itself to interrupting TV Box pirated signals.

Despite not having a legal instrument to act directly on the contents transmitted over the internet, by streaming, Anatel pointed out that, technically, the laboratory is able to do so, but awaits the National Film Agency (Ancine) to be able to act.

“Pirate transmissions over the internet are not covered by Anatel’s Action Plan initiated in February this year, but we sent a work plan to Ancine and we await the position of the culture agency”, said Anatel’s Inspection Superintendent, Hermano Barros Tercius, to the Tele.Síntese website.

However, as pointed out by the Tele.Síntese website, Ancine’s management was not present at the laboratory’s inauguration event and did not even send representatives, even though it is installed in the same building as Anatel. The Federal Revenue Service, the Federal Police and Abin were represented.

In all, the laboratory has 12 monitoring screens, six workstations for face-to-face work and can also be accessed remotely. When fully assembled, the structure will have 100 monitoring devices for the regulatory agency.

With this, the laboratory will have the capacity to inspect the Box TVs that transmit via satellite, those that transmit via cable and those that transmit via IPTV. Professionals will also try to find out how underground networks are getting the unauthorized content.

Although there are no official numbers, Anatel estimates that up to 7 million TV Boxes access content irregularly in Brazil. Approximately 1.4 million pieces of equipment were seized by the agency in operations in partnership with the Federal Police.

The regulatory body highlighted that TV Boxes are unsafe, as they can be controlled by third parties and used in hacker attacks. In invasions, cyber criminals control equipment to access a website or application.
