A Globalstarpartner company of Apple for the resource Emergency SOS via satellitereached an agreement with the SpaceX (from Elon Musk) to launch at least 17 satellites into low Earth orbit, where they will power the company’s existing satellite constellation.
According to TechCrunchdata obtained through regulatory documents indicate that Apple is directly linked to this agreement, which cost US$64 million and has a forecast for the satellites are launched by 2025.
Being cited as a “launch partner” of Globalstar, Apple — as was already known — is “reimbursing” the company in 95% of expenses related to satellites (which includes launch expenses).
In addition, Apple has agreed to provide cash to upgrade the company’s ground station network and to invest $252 million to fund start-up costs associated with restocking the satellite operator’s constellation.
In return, Apple will be able to use 85% of Globalstar’s network capacity to provide satellite connectivity to iPhones, which gained the Emergency SOS feature via satellite with the launch of the iPhone 14 line last year.
The deal, as remembered by AppleInsidercomes amid a dispute between SpaceX and Globalstar, which is accusing Elon Musk’s company of trying to illegally gain access to the 1.6GHz and 2.4GHz radio bands for its Starlink mobile internet service.
Possible interference in these bands might jeopardize Globalstar’s operation and, consequently, the functioning of services such as the iPhones’ satellite Emergency SOS feature.
