NEW YORK | Nearly 40 years following his very first adventure, Mario remains tireless. As proof, the most famous plumber will soon return to us in a brand new crazy, colorful and extremely promising adventure. The Journal traveled to the Big Apple to try out the long-awaited Super Mario Bros. Wonderalmost two months before its release in stores.
The atmosphere is electric on the terrace of a trendy hotel in Midtown, New York. In fact, the excitement of members of the media from across America is so palpable that it rivals that of a Times Square during rush hour.
Yes, at this point. Because it’s to discover, in person, the brand new chapter of the saga Super Mario Bros. that Nintendo invited them to the Big Apple, several weeks before its launch.
Back to basics
A new adventure of the famous mustachioed firefighter alone is an event. But in this case, it is all the more notable since it marks a return to its roots for the franchise, bringing Mario and his gang back to a two-dimensional world, more than a decade following the New Super Mario Bros. destined, at the time, for the Wii U.

The trailer, revealed last June, has already made fans’ mouths water. And they’ll be happy to know that the scent that emanates from the final product is just as intoxicating. Because following a trial session of 60 minutes, we can already say that Super Mario Bros. Wonder seems to fulfill all its promises.
new kingdom
So what to expect? First, to a change of environment. Indeed, Mario and his gang leave their traditional Mushroom Kingdom in favor of a new land, entirely flowery. And who says new place says new characters; our heroes will meet familiar friends and enemies (yes, yes, Bowser is still there), but also hitherto unknown accomplices and opponents.
Fans can rest assured, however; this change of scenery is in no way disorienting, the essence and aesthetics of the saga being carefully preserved. This is also where one of the great strengths of the saga lies. Super Mario Bros. While each new entry takes us on a new adventure, it never breaks with its roots, giving the player that heartwarming sense of familiarity.
Among the main novelties put forward by Super Mario Bros. Wonder, the most exciting is probably the hero’s ability to transform… into an elephant. It’s goofy and incredibly cute, yes, but above all it opens up a whole world of possibilities, ranging from its ability to smash enemies and obstacles with its trunk to that of carrying around water to make wilted flowers bud and thus make appear new paths and various elements.

A scalable environment
Another notable addition? These magic flowers which, once touched, come to distort the world in which the player evolves in different ways. Psychedelic light effects, Mario mutation, enemy and environment transformations… the results are as surprising as they are colorful and varied. We had a blast seeing them happen on our screen, changing the atmosphere and the course of the game.

At the end of this test session, the conclusion is therefore clear: Super Mario Bros. Wonder promises to live up to even the highest expectations. We therefore know for a fact that it will be frankly difficult to wait another nearly two months to plunge back into this wonderful and inviting world. Patience is a virtue, it seems. And Nintendo gives us the proof today.
Travel and accommodation costs for this report were provided by Nintendo.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder will be available on Nintendo Switch from October 20.
