Access to Care in Martinique: Addressing Health Service Tensions and Managing Patient Influx

2023-09-01 22:42:51

In Martinique, in recent weeks, the health system has experienced strong tensions, particularly impacting the emergency services. The Martinique Regional Health Agency and its partners are mobilizing to limit the effects of these tensions and facilitate access to care.

Due to the active circulation of dengue, associated with an episode of very high heat and an increase in the number of cases of Covid-19 infection, the emergency rooms of Martinique are overwhelmed by a large influx of patients.

As of Monday, September 4, 2023, non-emergency people will be redirected to appropriate care.

Before going to the emergency room, you must call 15 in order to have appropriate care.

During the day, you must first contact the attending physician.

In the evening, on weekends or in case of unavailability of the attending physician, you must call 15 before going spontaneously to the emergency room. Appropriate care will be offered if it is not an emergency.

The medical regulation of center 15 has additional tools to improve access to non-scheduled care with the support of independent doctors.

This coordination between the hospital and city medicine will provide a rapid response, 7 days a week, to any request for care.

The emergency department is strictly reserved for patients who need an immediate response in terms of medical care and resources.

The ARS of Martinique stresses the importance of adopting the right reflexes in order to reduce the congestion of hospital services.
