This week, many people received their warning extract from the property tax roll. A significant increase has been observed compared to 2022. This increase is explained by inflation but also by the decision of several Brussels municipalities to increase their taxation on property tax.
According to information from the RTBF, the property tax for a small Brussels apartment compared to that of a 300 m2 house with a garden in Walloon Brabant is lower for a house in Walloon Brabant. This observation is explained by the fact that in addition to a 10% indexation imposed in the Walloon and Brussels regions, the municipalities of Brussels have revised upwards, in their 2023 budget, their additional centimes to the property tax.
Forest increased its additionals by nearly 28%, Anderlecht by 18%, Ixelles and Molenbeek by around 16%, Saint-Gilles by 13%, Watermael-Boitsfort and Schaerbeek by 10%. Some municipalities have decided to compensate for this increase with a municipal housing bonus: 200 euros in Forest, 150 euros in Anderlecht, 140 in Evere, 100 in Ixelles, 40 in Jette, 100 in Saint-Gilles and 115 in Schaerbeek. Over the past five years, Anderlecht has increased its property tax by 50.2%, Forest by 49.7%, Ixelles by 46.3%, Schaerbeek by 44.7%, Evere by 39%, Woluwe-Saint-Lambert by 38.7% and Jette by 38.4%, according to our colleagues.
Didier Hamal, the president of the National Syndicate of Owners (SNPC), explains: “that certain municipalities have decided to increase, in a substantial way, the rates of municipal surcharges. All the owners are obviously scandalized and wonder why the municipalities have not restrained themselves in this tax appetite when all the other expenses of the owners increase and that in addition we have limited the indexation of their rental income, ”reports RTBF .
