According to calculations by the trade unions, there are currently around 2,000 fewer qualified health and nursing staff in the health system across Austria than in 2019.

The actual minus is likely to be even greater, since the deletions from the health professions register would not be fully visible until 2024, according to the unions in an open letter to Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens).

“conditions unacceptable”

“The current conditions are unacceptable and endanger not only those who work in this area, but also people who depend on the services of this system,” criticizes the chairman of the younion health team, Edgar Martin. Reinhard Waldhoer, head of the GÖD health union, threatens to take action “if the political leaders are not prepared to prevent the threatening burnout of the health system”.

Specifically, the unions are once more demanding an adjustment of benefits to the number of employees, tax exemption from the 32nd hour per week, shorter working hours with full wage compensation, a regulation for hard labor for all employees and more payment for trainees.
