The City of Liège took an additional step on Friday in terms of animal welfare by banning the sale of all live animals, and no longer just dogs and cats, in public markets and in the context of itinerant activities. A provision which will come into force on January 1, 2024, the City of Liège was told following the meeting of the municipal college.

Communal markets are not suitable places for the marketing of live animals. They are often conducive to unreflective and impulsive acquisitions. The veterinary scientific community but also those responsible for animal welfare adhere to this point of view, public places not offering the guarantees of good information on the ins and outs of such a purchase.“, can we read in the press release from the municipal college.

The latter also considers, in particular in view of the observations made in the field, that the conditions of detention of the animals are not always observed, despite the checks carried out by the animal welfare unit of the City of Liège. Furthermore, the conditions for transporting the animals to those markets are not adequate either.

Buying an animal is an act that must be considered. It is necessary to ensure the well-being of the animal and to know its needs“, emphasizes Christine Defraigne, the alderman of Liège in charge of animal welfare. It was therefore decided to modify the municipal regulations in this direction: “The exhibition, the offer for sale and the sale of live animals are prohibited on the markets organized by the City of Liège.“. A provision that will come into force on January 1, 2024.

In the event of non-compliance with the prohibition, and following prior warning, the municipal college may order the suspension or withdrawal of the authorization to occupy a site in the public domain granted to the offender.
