X (formerly Twitter) will collect biometrics, education and employment history data from users

X, formerly known as “Twitter”, has made changes to its privacy policies that allow it to collect more personal information from its users. According to the changes, from September 29, the social network will have access to biometric data “for identification and security purposes”, according to the company.

In a note sent to CBS this Thursday (31), the company claims that the biometric data collection will only be done with X Premium subscribers — a service that was known as “Twitter Blue” before Elon Musk’s rebranding. The aim is to streamline the verification process with a third-party facial recognition system.

“X will give the option to provide your ID, combined with a selfie, to add a layer of verification, and biometric data can be extracted from the document and selfie image for matching purposes,” explains the social network.

The system should help link an account to a natural person when processing their government-issued identity document, according to X, promising more security for users and avoiding cases of fraud on the platform.

Although the social network does not specify what biometric data may be collected, it is mentioned that the information will be used in automated technologies, which might include facial recognition software, fingerprint detection and even palm and iris scanning.

Note that the former Twitter is not the only social network that collects biometrics data from its users for verification purposes. Meta Verified, for example, requires a selfie to perform facial recognition along with the image of an official identification document and provide the “blue seal” to people who subscribe to the service.

The company must also start gather information regarding schooling and work of all platform users. The new policy states that the social network will be able to collect “employment history, educational history, employment preferences, skills, job search activity and engagement, among others”.

As the document mentions, this data collection can make ads more relevant to users, as well as recommend potential job openings to workers, as well as help employers find candidates.

Although most users choose to look for jobs and candidates on LinkedIn, the new policy reiterates X’s commitment to becoming an “everything app”, which will integrate diversified services that are unrelated to its initial microblogging proposal. One example is X Hiring, a platform for job opportunities.

Linda Yaccarino, CEO of X, revealed the company’s interest in joining the fintech business with tools for payments and banking services, in addition to creating new experiences in audio, video and text for the platform.
