Crackdown at Brussels-Midi Station: Police Arrest Homeless, Pickpockets, and Drug Offenders

A few dozen police officers are present at Brussels-Midi station. According to Régis Kalut, spokesman for the federal police, the means have been reinforced in a preventive and repressive approach. The action aims above all to redirect the homeless and drug addicts to suitable places. Securail and other players such as prevention associations are also on site. At 5:30 p.m., the police informed us of an initial assessment of 13 administrative arrests. The police specify that 12 people are known for pickpocketing and 1 person for disturbing public order. In addition, 7 court cases were opened for various offenses such as possession of narcotics, carrying a prohibited weapon or false documents.

On Saturday August 26, more than 200 police officers combed through the Gare du Midi, arresting homeless people, wanderers and pickpockets, under the watchful eye of the mayors of Saint-Gilles and Anderlecht.

“Everyone knows that the situation has been complicated around the station for many years,” said Jean Spinette, mayors of Saint-Gilles (PS), on Saturday. At the end of the day, the police zone announced the arrest of 56 people.
