At the start of school in the second year of the war, Ukraine registered more school enrolments. “This year we are expecting regarding 340,000 first-class students,” said Deputy Minister of Education Andriy Vitrenko on Ukrainian news television. In the previous year there were regarding 15,000 fewer.

In 2021, however, there were still over 400,000 children enrolled in school. The capital, Kiev, has almost reached the pre-war level with around 25,000 tavern classes. School traditionally starts on September 1st for the more than four million Ukrainian pupils.

With the exception of the areas close to the front, education takes place in schools in most of the country. However, due to possible Russian air raids, the prerequisite is the presence of air-raid shelters. According to the government, almost 70 percent of schools nationwide are equipped with such shelters.

Lots of online lessons

In the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv near the Russian border, around 80 percent of students continue to be taught online. The city has set up 60 classrooms for more than 1,000 students in the subway for face-to-face teaching, primarily for first graders.

After the Russian invasion began more than 18 months ago, teaching was only online for a long time. Due to the wave of refugees caused by the war, women with children in particular left the country. After successful Ukrainian counterattacks, some of the refugees have already been able to return. According to the UN, 6.2 million Ukrainian refugees are still registered worldwide.
