Technology Power over Ethernet to transfer power and data over a single cable will surprise few people, however, transferring power and data over a single optical cable is fresh and unusual. This surprised researchers from the Japanese corporation NTT and scientists from the Kitami Institute of Technology. Over a single fiber optic cable, they transmitted data and 1 W of power over a distance of over 10 km.

For the experiment, a conventional 125-micron fiber-optic cable with four fibers was taken. Each of the four fibers was fed with light at a wavelength of 1550 nm, which was used to generate energy at the opposite end, and data at a wavelength of 1310 nm was fed into two fibers. The data transfer rate remained at the level of 10 Gb / s, but in parallel there was a transfer of power with a power of 1 W over a distance of up to 14 km.

It is claimed that the efficiency of the proposed solution reaches 14 W / km, which is considered a world record. Such a solution can be a lifesaver during natural disasters when there is no power on site. In this case, the equipment can be powered from afar at the same time as data is being transferred. Stretching a single optical cable into a disaster area will be easier, cheaper and safer than deploying a conventional power supply system. Even a small commercial drone can cope with such work, so the new development has a lot of chances to translate into real products.
