The police presence is reinforced near the Gare du Midi, in Brussels. The objective is to restore security in the district, considered the district of “shame” by the foreign media.
Dimitri is a chief inspector and he has been in the Anderlecht police zone for 18 years. He knows this neighborhood better than anyone and its evolution holds no secrets for him. “Before, we really had crime that came from our area, whereas now it comes to us from all over“, he explains. “Before, it was not difficult to recognize the perpetrators, who came from the surrounding neighborhoods. Now the crime comes from outside and it is less known“.

Patrolling on a daily basis with the teams in the field with the sole aim of securing it, making it more pleasant: not always easy on a human level. “En as a human being, it is difficult, because we see social misery, it is inevitable. As a police officer, the difficulties are still present. Behind the uniform, the person also reacts. We find ourselves faced with disadvantaged people and we don’t always have the tools to help these people. We feel helpless“.
For several weeks, the Gare du Midi district has been at the center of attention and its insecurity has worried the authorities. Since Saturday, and the police reinforcement, the efforts continue. “We see that our presence makes people flee. Now you have to try to recover behind and not just push back elsewhere“.
