“It’s just impossible”, Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom should have died shooting this scene from one of the greatest sagas in the history of cinema
Pirates of the Caribbean may not be the most realistic franchise out there, but even the undead and krakens can’t escape the laws of physics. In this cult scene, Jack Sparrow and Will Turner indeed achieve something cruelly impossible.

Pirates of the Caribbean is a saga famous for its spectacular battles, its monsters, and of course its strong-willed pirates. The piracy franchise does not hesitate to leave pure and hard realism to enter fully into the myth, but certain scenes frankly defy all the laws of physics… Without really any valid reason! One cult scene in particular has been driving the pickiest viewers crazy for years. It’s the one where Jack Sparrow and Will Turner flee under a boat… walking under water!
Unless Jack Sparrow is actually the Hulk, that’s impossible.
When Hollywood comes face to face with Archimedes’ Principle, it sometimes stings the eyes a little. We all remember this funny scene from the saga. Seeking to escape the guards, Jack Sparrow and Will Turner hide under a boat, then walk in the water to continue their escape… at the bottom of the ocean! It must be admitted that under a boat, in the depths, the two accomplices are beautiful and very invisible.
Except that the laws of physics make this scene strictly impossible! In the real world, it would be impossible for two men to keep under water a large boat that harbors air. The boat would immediately rise to the surface. One might argue that Jack and Will are particularly tough guys… But no. To keep such a boat under water and with so much air would be like being able to pull down more than 1.2 tons. Not only will Will and Jack not have anchors hanging from their ankles, but they also trip over shrimp traps in said scene!
They replicated the experience!
The scene tickled the fans so much that several videographers tried to reproduce it, but in real life. The friends from MythBusters have for example reproduced identically the conditions faced by Jack and Will, and their observation is quick: it is strictly impossible to submerge the boat – even a little. Even with ankle weights, the upward thrust is far too strong.
