But this rarity does not mean that CO2 is without effect. Because, unlike nitrogen, oxygen and most other gases that have no greenhouse effect, CO2 contributes to the greenhouse effect, i.e. it influences how our planet retains heat.
Thinking that a substance has no effect because it is present in very small quantities is what is called hasty judgement: it amounts to concluding without having examined all the facts.
Because, in fact, very small amounts of a substance can have significant consequences. We notice it for example in medicine, which gives us several examples. Thus 800 ppm of alcohol in our blood makes us drunk, an anti-inflammatory acts at 3 ppm and arsenic can kill us at only 0.01 ppm.
Even if the concentration of CO2 may seem insignificant, its increase has many very important consequences for the planet, and therefore for us.
