The weight limit of a child’s backpack depends on the child’s weight, according to an expert.
Doctor Guillaume Corbin, president of the Association des chiropraticiens du Québec (ACQ), gave an interview on the subject to host Jean-François Baril on Qub radio.
“For a child in elementary school, ideally, you should not exceed 10% of the child’s body weight. If the child weighs 60 pounds, it should not exceed six pounds, he said. […] In high school, you can go up to 15% of body weight.
If a child must carry a backpack that exceeds the recommended weight limit, the doctor suggests that they place the bag on the ground, when not in motion, to avoid injury.
Carrying the bag also makes all the difference. It must be stable and close to the body of the wearer.
“We often see that the backpack is much too low, underlined Guillaume Corbin. It should be close to the body. You can put a hand between the back and the backpack.”
“We see it in the clinic, a badly worn backpack will create back problems, he added. […] We see repetitive neck pain, back pain and shoulder pain. There is always a tension in the neck and in the shoulders.
