Brazil is increasingly connected. People use the internet to pay bills, shop, or chat with friends and family. As access grows, so do the risks. Therefore, it is necessary for everyone to know how to protect themselves and apply this knowledge through tools for data protection on the web.

According to NordVPN survey, the Brazilian population knows how to create strong passwords (96%) and can even identify whether a device has been infected by malware (89%), however, only 2% know regarding online tools that protect digital privacy, while 12% know how to protect their home Wi-Fi network. Finally, only 18% are aware of the importance of reading the terms of service for apps and online services.

The search

O National Privacy Test (NPT) is a worldwide, annual, open-access survey that anyone can respond to and is designed to assess cybersecurity and online privacy awareness. It is worth mentioning that the survey did not define age and gender quotas. The report compares two sets of data, one was collected over a six-month period in 2023, while the other set covers an entire year in 2021. This year, more than 26,000 people were interviewed in 175 countries. Among the objectives are to educate the public regarding digital threats and the importance of data and information security in the internet age.

Global awareness of Internet privacy is waning

The global NPT score reached (61%) this year, which shows the decrease in the world’s online privacy and cybersecurity awareness compared to 2022 (64%) and 2021 (66%). Many still underestimate the importance of reading the terms of service. However, this metric is improving faster than others. People aged between 30 and 54, for example, have the best cybersecurity skills compared to other age groups.

The champions in privacy and cybersecurity awareness

Poland and Singapore (64%) Germany and United States (63%) United Kingdom, Austria and Portugal (62%)

“The sheer volume of online activities and digital interactions that people engage in on a daily basis is one of the reasons why cybersecurity awareness is declining globally,” explains NordVPN country manager Maria Eduarda Melo.

Evolution of Brazil in cybersecurity

From 2021 until now, some indices evaluated in the survey have shown positive evolution in the country. Are they:

– Increased the number of people who update the app as soon as it is available (64% in 2021 once morest 77% in 2023), this increase is higher compared to other countries.

– This year, the overall NPT went from 33% to 60%, demonstrating that the country is no longer the most reckless nation on the planet when it comes to social media.

– Currently, most Brazilians know what types of sensitive data they should avoid sharing on social media (83%).

“As technology continues to advance, cybercriminals are also adapting their tactics, making it difficult for the average user to keep up. In addition, there is a common misconception that cybersecurity is the sole responsibility of service providers, people need to be aware and protect themselves better,” says Melo.
