The words of Pope Francis’ online video message with the participants of the Russian Youth Day held in St. Petersburg on August 25th were published in a misleading way by some media.

But the meaning and scope of the message made by Pope Francis was clarified by the official spokesman of the Vatican Dr. Matteo Bruni in the press conference.

The media misinterpreted the Pope’s words that ‘the great Russian culture, spirituality and heritage will be a great asset for the growth of the young generation’. The Pope also underlined that Russian spirituality certainly did not uphold imperial logic and governmental figures.

After repeating an invitation to be “sowers of reconciliation”, the Pope asked the boys and girls gathered at the Russian city’s St Catherine’s Basilica to never forget their own “heritage”. He then recalled “Great Russia” and its cultural history and mentioned Peter the Great and Catherine II.

The Pope’s words, published on the website of the ‘Church of the Mother of God’ in Moscow, have sparked several protests from Ukraine. There is a false propaganda going on in the media world that the Pope’s idea is the promotion of imperialist ideas.

But Major Archbishop of the Greek-Catholic Church Sviatoslav Shevchuk stated that ‘Pope Francis is a staunch opponent and critic of any form of imperialism and colonialism.
