Food environments in supermarkets in Flanders were thus found to be generally unhealthy, and this is particularly the case in low-income areas.

At the checkouts, an average of 97.5% of the food available was ultra-processed, compared to 72.2% and 58.5% at the front and back ends of the shelves. According to the study, this disposition was reinforced by the presence of marketing messages on the packaging, in particular on confectionery and sweet biscuits.
