Huawei has just come back to the smartphone market with a new device, the Mate 60 Pro, which promises not only the return of 5G, but also a feature never before seen on smartphones.
While smartphone launches are usually announced in advance, Huawei has just suddenly introduced its new high-end device, the Mate 60 Pro. He directly succeeds the Mate 50 Pro from the previous year, which we had the opportunity to test. This new iteration promises many big changes, here they are.
The Huawei Mate 60 Pro can make satellite calls
First of all, note that the Huawei Mate 60 Pro is the first smartphone in the world to be able to make calls and send messages via satellite. In other words, even when there’s no network signal where you are, you’ll still be able to make and receive satellite calls and stay online.
This functionality therefore differs from what we already know from Apple with emergency calls by satellite. As their name suggests, they only allow you to contact the emergency services, and have repeatedly proven themselves by saving the lives of many people. With Huawei’s feature, you can now contact anyone close to you, even in white areas.
The Huawei Mate 60 Pro marks the return of 5G
The Huawei Mate 60 Pro is powered by a Kirin 9000s chip with 1 core at 2.62 GHz, 3 cores at 2.15 GHz as well as 4 cores at 1.53 GHz. The chip engraved in 5 nm is therefore significantly slower than the latest SoCs from Qualcomm, but its performance is not its main asset.
The second major novelty of this Huawei Mate 60 Pro is the return of 5G. After the 2019 US sanctions, Huawei had to abandon the technology as the company might no longer rely on US technologies. The Chinese manufacturer has finally finally circumvented these sanctions by using a Chinese modem.
What technical characteristics for the Huawei Mate 60 Pro?
As for the rest of the smartphone’s spec sheet, Huawei has made sure to use high-end components. At the front we find a 6.82-inch FHD+ (2720 x 1260 pixels) OLED LTPO display with thin borders and a refresh of 120 Hz.
The photo part is provided by 50 MP main camera, a 12 MP ultra wide-angle sensor as well as a 48 MP periscope sensor offering 3.5X optical and 100X digital zoom. While this may not seem like much compared to some rivals, the Huawei Mate 60 Pro can always count on its partnership with XMAGE to provide quality shots. The model of the previous year had also been voted best photophone when it was released by DXOMARK.
The selfie part is provided by a 13 MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 3D depth-sensing camera. These sensors are housed at the top of the screen in three separate holes, which had never before been seen on a smartphone.
Autonomy is ensured by a 5000mAh battery. You have to count on a quick recharge of 88W wired, 50W wireless and no less than 20W for reverse charging.
What price for the Huawei Mate 60 Pro?
As expected, the Huawei Mate 60 Pro is currently only launched in China. It is marketed at 6999 yuan, i.e. 888 euros excluding taxes. This is therefore slightly more than the previous model.
Four colors are available, and all are inspired by local mountains and rivers: Green Yachuan, Silver Baisha, Purple Nannuo and Black Yadan. The smartphone has 12 GB of RAM and three storage versions: 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB. You can expand storage up to 256GB using an NM memory card, unlike most competitors. It comes with HarmonyOS 4.0and not Harmony NEXT, the version that says goodbye to Android for good.
We imagine that the smartphone will be launched in France, but it should probably not be expected for at least several months. We will obviously keep you informed if Huawei gives more information on this subject.
